BIBLE PROVEN SCRIPTURES ON WATER BAPTISM
WATER BAPTISM
One day as his disciples were gathered about him, Jesus made a
very strong statement to Peter.
MT. 16:13-19 … I will give unto thee the KEYS of the kingdom of heaven …
What Jesus meant by KEYS can be understood when we turn to …
LK. 11:52 Woe unto you lawyers! for ye have taken away the
KEY OF KNOWLEDGE …
Here, in his rebuke of the lawyers, Jesus tells us that the word KEY
refers to UNDERSTANDING or KNOWLEDGE of the word of God.
Peter used the KEY of knowledge on the day of Pentecost, when he
answered the Jews’ question concerning true salvation …
ACTS 2:37-39 … Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and BE
BAPTIZED EVERY ONE OF YOU IN THE NAME OF
JESUS CHRIST for the remission of sins, and ye shall
receive the gift of the Holy Ghost …
Some people feel that Peter was in error when he said this, preferring
to hold to the words of Jesus in another setting. That setting is …
MT. 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, BAPTIZING
THEM IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, AND OF THE
SON, AND OF THE HOLY GHOST:
If we have a true understanding of God’s word, we can see that there
is NO contradiction between these two scriptures. If Peter was
WRONG on the day of Pentecost after having received the KEYS of
KNOWLEDGE from Jesus, then you and I had better close up shop.
But such is NOT the case! Acts 2 and Mt. 28 are saying the SAME
THING.
Let us consider Mt. 28 closely. The words “Father,” “Son,” and “Holy
Ghost” are NOT NAMES, just TITLES. Jesus said NAME, singular.
In other words, there is ONE NAME of the Father, Son, and Holy
Ghost. Is this referring to three persons? NO! Turn to …
ISA. 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a SON is given …
and HIS NAME shall be called … The everlasting
FATHER, The PRINCE OF PEACE.
Everyone agrees that this scripture prophesied of Jesus; but it refers
to him as a FATHER, as well as a SON. Now, we see Jesus is given a
name …
MT. 1:21 … she shall bring forth a SON, and thou shalt call his
name JESUS …
But Jesus, when he grew up, told the nation of Israel …
JN. 5:43 I am come in my FATHER’S NAME, and ye receive me
not: if another shall come in his OWN name, him ye
will receive.
He made it known that he had come in the Father’s name. We all
know that HIS name is Jesus, therefore his FATHER’S name is JESUS.
What this means is that JESUS is the FAMILY or STOCK name of
heaven. A NAME denotes a NATURE, and Jesus represented his
Father in every way …
JN. 17:3-6 … I have manifested THY NAME [or NATURE] unto the
men which thou gavest me out of the world …
JN. 17:26 … I have declared unto them THY NAME …
Yes, Jesus had a Father. But HE, HIMSELF, was CALLED a Father, and
was also called a Son. How does the Holy Ghost fit into this?
JN. 14:16-18 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you
another Comforter … Even the SPIRIT OF TRUTH;
whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth
him not, neither knoweth him: but YE KNOW HIM;
FOR HE DWELLETH WITH YOU, AND SHALL BE IN
YOU. I will not leave you comfortless: I WILL COME
TO YOU.
So it is clear that the NAME of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost
is JESUS — the family name of Third Heaven! Peter goes on to make
it even stronger …
ACTS 4:5-12 … Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is
none other NAME under heaven given among men,
whereby WE MUST BE SAVED.
And Paul says it in these words …
EPH. 3:14-15 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the WHOLE FAMILY IN
HEAVEN AND EARTH IS NAMED,
Let us consider a few New Testament scriptures where water baptism
took place.
ACTS 8:14-16 … when [Peter and John] were come down, prayed
for them, that they [the Samaritans] might receive
the Holy Ghost … [for] they were BAPTIZED in the
NAME OF THE LORD JESUS. …
Also, when Peter went to the Gentile household of Cornelius, he
said …
ACTS 10:47-48 Can any man forbid WATER, that these should not be
BAPTIZED, which have received the Holy Ghost as
well as we? And he commanded them to be
BAPTIZED IN THE NAME OF THE LORD.
Many have thought, in water baptism, that the words SPOKEN over
the person were the “important” part. This is NOT TRUE at all. There is
not ONE SCRIPTURE in the Bible that tells us what to SAY over a
person who is receiving water baptism!
Look closely at the last two scriptures. These people were baptized
IN the name of the Lord. It does NOT say what was SAID over them.
Here is another scripture that will make it even clearer. Paul said …
COL. 3:17 And whatsoever ye DO in WORD or DEED, DO ALL IN
the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God
and the Father by him.
Today, as I am giving you this lesson, I am DOING something IN
WORD. But you do not hear me stop every five minutes and TELL you
that I am doing this in the name of Jesus. Why?
BECAUSE I am working WITH Jesus.
Is water baptism important?
Is water baptism important?
YES, it is a COMMANDMENT of the Lord, as well as …
1 PT. 3:21 … the answer of a good conscience toward God …
What does this all mean? Briefly, water baptism is a natural act that
points a new believer in Jesus to the spiritual birth process of the
soul. The natural birth process is the pattern for the spiritual. A
natural child forms in its mother’s womb, immersed in or surrounded
by water. As the child forms, it begins to turn in preparation for the
time when it will emerge from the womb into full natural birth.
The spiritual process follows this natural pattern. From the seed of
the Word of God comes the message of repentance from past sins.
This causes faith (belief) to arise in the heart, like a child being formed
in its mother’s womb. This message then surrounds (or baptizes) the
child, like the water in the womb, and it begins to “turn” from its
former sins. This “turning” (or repentance) in the water then prepares
it to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit — the divine breath of life for
the soul — which delivers the child from the womb into full spiritual
birth (John 3:3-8).
